Dr. Alok Kanungo is a noted physician with over 150,000 registered patients, and widely known for his fundamental research in the field of diabetes.
Dr Kanungo did his PhD in diabetology from Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and has over 50 peer-reviewed publications in diabetes research. With a research focus on type-1 diabetes and malnutrition-related diabetes, he has been the Principal Investigator of several type 1 diabetes genetics studies in India and has been a key member of the Consultative Committee of the World Health Organization for the Management of type-2 diabetes in India.
As the PI of an NIH (USA)-funded study of the genetic mapping of type 1 diabetics in India, he led the research team that discovered new genes which predict the incidence of diabetes in children. Dr Kanungo has also pioneered immunological studies on T1 diabetes, T2 diabetes, latent autoimmune diabetes amongst adults (LADA) and on malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus (MRDM).
He is also founder-chairman of KIDS Hospital – a large multi-speciality hospital with a focus on affordable surgical and critical care, located in Dumduma, Bhubaneswar.
